In welcome news for solar thermal power in Australia, an extension has been granted until 30 June 2012 for the Solar Dawn consortium to achieve financial close.
The Solar Dawn project will use AUSTELA Member AREVA Solar's Australian developed Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector technology in a 250MW power plant on a 450ha site 20kms from Chinchilla in south western Queensland. It will be Australia's first large-scale solar thermal power plant and one of the largest solar thermal power plants in the world. Demonstrating the versatility of solar thermal power, gas-fired backup capacity may be added in a future stage to enhance despatchability and security of supply from the plant. More information on the Solar Dawn project can be found here.
