Growing momentum for CST in Australia

In the context of the recent decision to build a 150 MW solar thermal power plant with 8 hours of full-load thermal energy storage to diversify and stabilize South Australia’s electricity system, followed by its development approval earlier this month, concentrated solar thermal energy is experiencing increasing interest from different government entities and companies in Australia.

ARENA to test market for concentrated solar thermal projects: Request for information

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is currently seeking industry information as the first step in exploring how concentrated sunlight could generate reliable, affordable renewable energy with built-in storage for our national grids. 

Interested parties are expected to include (but are not limited to) project proponents, debt and equity investors, original equipment manufacturers, off-takers and government entities.

Responses are due by 5pm 31 July 2017, can cover all types of CST technology and project sizes, and should not exceed a written submission of 20 pages.

New six-point plan to enhance South Australian power system

On 14 March, South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill presented a new six-point plan by the SA government to enhance the South Australian power system. Announcement of the plan follows intense debate as to the causes of electricity system failures in South Australia over recent months, a debate that has brought to a head longstanding fears that National Electricity Market rules have failed to keep pace with rapid technology changes.
